AEROPRESS

The Aeropress is an extremely flexible method of brewing, with scores of recipes using this brewing method abounding online. Here, we’ve outlined two of the most common and our favourite methods to brew coffee using the device.

The Inverted Method

Time: 1:30-2:00 minutes
Servings: 1

Ingredients:

Aeropress filters
16g of ground coffee
195g of water just off the boil

Directions:

  1. Place the filter into the cap and rinse first.
  2. Pull the plunger until it’s almost out of the chamber, then invert the Aeropress so it is standing on its handle.
  3. Add the 16g coffee and start the timer.
  4. Fill the chamber with 100g of water, or about halfway and stir the coffee solution ensuring it is all saturated. Then fill the chamber with the remaining water.
  5. At the 1:00 mark, invert the Aeropress on top of a wide mouthed mug and begin to press. The coffee should be fully extracted in 10-15 seconds of the pressure being applied.

The Traditional Method

Time: 1:30-2:00 minutes
Servings: 1

Ingredients:

Aeropress filters
14g of medium ground coffee (coarser grind than inverted method)
200g of water just off the boil

Directions:

  1. Place the filter into the cap and rinse. Screw the cap and filter into the brewing chamber and then fit the chamber onto a mug or decanter.
  2. Add the 14g of coffee
  3. Start the timer and fill the chamber with 200g of boiled water. Stir a few times to ensure the solution is evenly saturated. Place the plunger on top of the brewing chamber to retain heat.
  4. At the 1:00 minute mark remove the plunger and stir three times with a gentle pushing motion.
  5. Replace the plunger and depress slowly- the coffee should be fully extracted in 20-30 seconds.
