Channi Coffee / Tea Strainer

For those just starting out in the world of freshly roasted and ground coffee, with no specialised equipment at home, this is the easiest and most convenient way of brewing a cup at home.

Approximate time:
000 – 1:20 – boil
1:20 – 1:50 – cool
1:50 – 3:30 – steep
3:30 – 3:55 – pour

Ingredients:
2 Tbsp/ 10-12 gms coarse ground coffee
Water
Tea Strainer

Directions:

  1. After bringing the water to a boil leave it to cool for a bit before putting it in the coffee. If the water is too hot, the coffee will be bitter.
  2. After stirring in the coffee, allow the coffee grounds to settle at the bottom so that all the coffee sludge stays in the vessel and you get minimal coffee grounds in your cup. Avoid stirring the coffee after it has settled.
  3. Adjust the amount of coffee used according to the strength of the coffee you prefer. The recommended 2 Tbsps is for one cup of 220ml capacity.
  4. A good tip to having a cleaner cup is to first strain the coffee using the channi and then run it through a muslin cloth which will trap all the fine grounds.
Cold Channi Coffee: Use cold water and leave your coffee covered for about 8-12 hours and strain it. You will have a gentle tasting brew with minimum acidity.
